Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area located in the border or Armenia and Azerbaijan. Legally and internationally, the area of Nagorno-Karabakh is under the governance of Azerbaijan, but ethnic Armenians have taken de facto control over the area for three decades, supported by both the Armenian government and Russia, who has continuously put Russian troops to defend the area. Now, almost 120,000 ethic Armenians live and occupy Nagorno-Karabakh.
During the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan war, Azerbaijan launched an attack in the area, killing several Russian troops and regaining control on its territory. Armenian government has warned the ethnic Armenians in the area that they might face a possibility of an ethnic cleansing, despite Azerbaijan's promise to 'treat them like an equal citizen'. As a result, more than 1,000 ethnic Armenians have left Nagorno-Karabakh to return to Armenian soil, with more expected to follow.
